How will science and technology change our lives in the future and what should India do to stay ahead in the game?
(Award winning essay in the Tata Building India
School Essay Competition 2011-12)
The world is passing through an era of technolgical
bloom since the beginning of the century.
We are accustomed to watch colour television with
options of more than hundred channels since we
were born. Parents say that in their childhood they
had only transistors and black and white television
with only one channel. A house without a computer,
we simply can't think of. But its so extensive existence
is only over a decade. Our parents talk about writing
letters, posting it at a post office, and then waiting
for weeks, at time for months for a reply to come
manually through the snail-mail. We do it in
moments through punching some keys in our
computer or in our mobile phone. Internet is a boon to the world; we are exposed to science from our
early childhood. We can't even imagine a World
without world-wide-web!
Scientists in every sphere are now engaged in proper
incorporation of technological inputs to augment he
available service in the field. Newer and improved
generations of satellites are taking their orbits around
the earth. These will help to improve the weather
forecasting early and more accurately. Planned and
proper disaster management following a natural
calamity would be possible even if the calamity can
not be averted. Bio-fuel stock of the earth is rapidly
exhausting. Soon many types of machinery including
automobiles will run with renewable energy source
like air and water. Robots will gradually take over
those jobs requiring precision and such jobs may
get hampered by fatigue. Many researchers are
engaged in the field of medical genetics, robotics
and genetic engineering. More and more genetic
diseases will be detected early, modified and
congenital anomalies will be prevented in near future
Soon in-vitro blood and organ production will save
many lives suffering from deadly non-functional or
poorly-functional organs. Anti-retro viral drug
research will be successful. AIDS will be a curable
disease then. Cancer research has taken a good pace. With newer ti-cancer drugs some of the cancers
will be successfully treatable soon. Quality and expectancy of life will thus be increased further.
India is always known throughout the world for its
brain. Rich international companies are hiring Indian
brains from premier medical, engineering and
management institutions. Utilizing the merit of these
brains, these Companies are inventing newer
scientific tools or products. India being a very large
and hugely populated country, it is consuming the
major share of these end products. International
companies are earning the profit.
Government and Indian companies will have to
create a proper environment so that talented
students of India from various premier institutes
stay back within the country. Investment in research
and developement sector have to be increased. If
the brains behind the upcoming inventions in various
fields could be kept within the country and properly
nurtured, India as a nation will be sitting in
the driver's seat in this century.
