It is obvious that in the competitive and fast moving world of today, each one of us have some ambitions in life. Even if we do not, our elders and our well- wishers keep advising and emphasising on the necessity to dream big, the reason, most often, is to earn big, but is that what ambition is all about?
On being asked, most of us will give a prompt
reply "I want to be a doctor" or "an engineer" or "a
scientist". However do we actually aspire to be good
citizens? We call certain professions 'noble' but how
many professionals do we actually find to be 'noble'?
Even while I am writing this article, I remember
being extremely surprised when one of my
academically admirable friend said he would like
to be a social worker. On hearing this unusual
aspiration, the first question that cropped up in
my mind was, "But, that won't make you rich!"
This natural question got a rare answer, which made
me think a lot. He said he wanted to change the face
of India.
Ever since we became independent, we have seen a
lot of changes. But as we all have read over an over
again in our text-books, everything has not changed
for all sections of the society. The millions of poor citizens have to cope up silently with inadequate
food, improper health and sanitation. Who is
responsible for their betterment if not us? Is this
what our freedom fighters dreamt of?
Sitting on the comfortable benches of our school
and not having experienced the real world we
imagine 'the ideal professionals serving the nation',
but if we come out of this imagination, we find
corruption in even the noblest of professions. We
forget about the investments the country has made
while educating us and escape to serve other nations.
Yet, we seldom think twice before blaming our nation
by saying "India shall never develop!" What have
we done to develop it?
I end with a simple request please aim and aspire
not just for yourself, but for all. Being humans, we
must definitely not be satisfied with setting goals
that only benefit us. Such selfish instincts bring out
the beasts in us. Rather, true humanity lies in the
desire to do something good for others. After all, we
would all be happy to see our nation prosper, won't we? So the next time you say. "I want to be a doctor
or "an engineer" or "a scientist", aspire fora truly
noble profession and serve your country to make it
the best.
