I was some what surprised. Or should I say, I was anxious? It was nearly half-past ten'o clock, a Monday night, 8th November 2012. T'he people around, in our neighourhood were long asleep. London was used to keeping early hours, as usual. Tiffany hadn't called me up. We were best friends, and lived together in the same apartment, and were completing our higher studies. We first met in Rebecuilla University and at first, lived separately, on our own expenses, but grew quite intimate friends within half a year, and shared the same apartment by working out a part-time job and managing our transactions.
I had taken a leave that day from my work, as it was my birthday. At first I didn't want to do so, but Tiffany forced me to take one. She pleaded a lot, and somehow, I gave in to her beseeching pleas. I remembered what she had said when she left for her work "You'll be receiving a great surprise today, Tulika. I will be back by seven pm. After..." "RRRRR .RRRRRRR" Her cell phone disconnected. She picked it up, and moved out of the door, directly starting her conversation, as if she knew it beforehand who was going to call her. She chattered merrily and walked out on the gravel path, busy talking. She has always been cheerful and very helpful too. It seemed as if it would have been better if she wore a "HAPPY TO HELP" badge. It would suit her very well.
But now it was half past ten. Three and a half hours late, as she was, worried me more than anything. All kinds of horrors were supposed. My mind whirled with all the bad happenings that could have happened to her, but I managed to cut it off by switching on the television. I called her cell phone again, but since past three hours, it has remained the same -"switched-off"
It was eleven pm already, and I started to panic then. After five minutes of a hard try of keeping my cool, I walked towards the door, to go out in search for her. No sooner had I opened the door, than my phone rang. I immediately picked it up and a woman said, with a harsh, low voice," Is this Tulika Mandal?"
"Yes, this is."I replied.
"I suppose you do know Tiffany Jordan?"
"Yes, I do. Has anything happened to her?"
"I am afraid so. Well, if you are asking me honestly, then.... let me say .. Something awfully terrible, She needs to be rushed to the hospital. She faced an accident with a truck a few minutes ago. She is lying in a pool of blood now. I checked her cell phone, and saw twelve missed calls from your number, but it seems that there isn't enough call balance in her phone, so I called you from my phone, as I figured out maybe you know her personally. Please reach the main street before CAPE CAFE; we have already hurried her to ....
" The phone was disconected.
I was panic-stricken. For one moment, I stood frozen, cursed myself for letting her go to work, and accused her as the one responsible for what happened due to her carelessness. Although the better part of me was focused on what happened to her. I dashed out of the door to CAPE CAFE. Within fifteen minutes I reached CAPE CAFE, panting, crying and almost exhausted due to the long run.
But alas! There was no sign of any accident Everything was extremely peaceful. Hardly few people were around. I stood there, perplexed. Suddenly someone grasped me from behind, and I quickly turned to see who it was. To my enormous astonishment, it was Tiffany, with her cheerful smile laughing as hard as she could.
I drooped down on my feet, with a sigh of relief, with enormous rage... but it soon went away when she hugged me and said, Sorry to scare you like that. I was already quite late, and at first I thought to present you a cake.... but the idea to Scare you up on your birthday struck me. To make it memorable I requested a lady, when I was down here to buy the cake for you, to lend me her cell phone, and played a prank on you ... and ya! Gotcha!! Ha-ha!! That was hilarious!! Never mind. Come let's get into the cafe. I have already ordered a cake for you and invited some of our friends. "AFTER ALL, IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY!!"
