It was the thirteenth night of June. A chilly wind was blowing, which was a perfect match for the eeriness of the night. The lanes of Down street were dark and lonely. Mr. Broad was returning home late that night. He had often heard stories regarding the haunted lane but never believed in such paranormal activities, thanks to his undaunted courage and spirit.
With heavy footsteps, Mr. Broad was trotting towards his house. He had already covered about half a mile and his legs were too weary by then. He longed for a cab. But there was no sign of any. Suddenly, Mr. Broad heard the purring of an engine. Within seconds, a distant vehicle emerged which, quite fortunately, turned out to be a cab. Without losing any time, he hired it. The car had a shabby look with its tattered seat covers. On the other hand, the driver was enwrapped in a black robe. After Mr. Broad seated himself, the car started moving At first, steadily, and then gradually accelerating. In a few minutes it had acquired the speed of the wind. Mr. Broad called out, "Hey! why are you driving so fast? Do you know where to go?" But there was no reply.
Mr. Broad got furious. He was onthe verge of beating the chauffeur, when a shrill voice reverberated in the vehicle. The voice said, "I know, Broad where to go. I know very well. Just trust me as I did five years ago ...."with these words the driver turned back. Mr. Broad was petrified to identify the face. It was half skeleton and half human. His eyes were transfixed on him and he called out." Peter!..... The driver retorted, "Yes, Peter ! The same guy whom you and two of your friends killed in the same car five years back.
"B.. but.. "Mr. Broad fumbled as he saw two more people sitting beside him. Broad! Peter has also killed Patrick and me the same way and now its your turn ......" Ten years have passed since this incident, but even today one will find the same cab in the lonely streets late at night. So, whenever you get up into a cab don't forget to ask whether the driver is Peter.
